I am continuing my tradition of getting injured in every sport I play, and I have proven that quilting is a sport (no quilter who has wrestled a large bed quilt under the sewing machine in the heat of the summer would disagree!)

On Saturday August 3rd, around 4pm in the afternoon, I sewed my finger. Most folks go through the skin, or stop the needle on the bone, or embed the needle in the bone. Not me -- I got the sewing needle through the fingerbone and right out the other side, leaving it embedded in the bone and having rough pointy-bits rubbing against the insides of my finger on both sides.

The X-rays are amazing -- I'm trying to get a copy of them and will post them if I succeed.

I had to wait until that Thursday before they could get me into surgery (in the operating room of a real hospital and everything) with a hand surgeon who could do evil things to my finger and then repair most of the damage he caused. The ER was unable to do much, but they were "nice" enough to remove the nail, which just added to my finger's unhappiness for those five days of waiting.

The worst part was that I learned my body really doesn't like opiates, so the various pain medications and I didn't get along too well. One particular drug made me unable to even keep plain water down, but eventually (Friday, day six) we found a winning combination.

The surgery, however, went better than expected, and the only lingering effects will be some cosmetic damage to my nail, and losing some sensitivity due to nerve damage on the pad of the finger.

I've learned to eat with my left hand -- so at least I got something from the experience!
